Marans chickens originated in France and were developed during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They were developed around Marans from local game-influenced fowl and imported utility breeds, with selection centered on dark eggs. Marans chickens have a substantial body, single comb, and lightly feathered or clean legs depending on line. Hens lay large dark brown eggs, typically 150–200 eggs per year. They are generally calm. Egg darkness varies by hen, age, and line; breeders should select for both shell color and sound utility traits. That blend of useful laying ability, calm character, and traditional appearance gives Black Copper Marans lasting appeal in both family and farm flocks. Those qualities give the birds lasting appeal beyond any single production trait or point of appearance.
