Rhode Island Red chickens originated in the United States and were developed during the late nineteenth century. They were developed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts from several red and Asian-influenced utility stocks for dependable farm production. Rhode Island Red chickens have a rectangular deep-red body and either single or rose comb. Hens lay large brown eggs, typically 200–250 eggs per year. They are generally assertive. They are adaptable, vigorous foragers and productive layers, though flock manners vary by line. That blend of useful laying ability, assertive character, and traditional appearance gives Rhode Island Red lasting appeal in both family and farm flocks. Those qualities give the birds lasting appeal beyond any single production trait or point of appearance.
